How we work

Flat Structure & Low Hierarchy
Our team structure is intentionally flat with a limited hierarchy. We prioritize flexibility and nimble movement of team members across teams to high-priority efforts. Broad, company-wide information flow is open and standardized, while giving functional teams autonomy to run their own internal workflows. Team Slack channels are open and searchable for all to understand individual team efforts, problem-solving, and progress.

Collaboration
We value the outcomes of focused effort and collaboration, and we don't subscribe to "always-on" responsiveness. We prioritize real-time, multiplayer collaboration and co-authoring in a shared and open digital workspace. We are organized around a single source of truth, in a cloud-first environment. We work flexibly across time zones and trust our team members to engage and respond as and when needed.

Impact
We champion momentum over deliberation and use the 80/20 rule to focus our efforts. We make decisions with clarity, take smart risks, and treat setbacks as data. We challenge, debate, and pressure-test ideas to move forward.

Continuous Improvement
We dissect mistakes to find the root cause and fix the system, prioritizing rapid learning, iteration, and evolution vs. blame. We subscribe to the concept of negative maintenance and recognize that doing nothing lets systems degrade. We encourage all team members to do maintenance and the unglamorous tasks to keep operations running smoothly.

Transparency
Our default communication style across the company is open — our "default to open" mindset across our digital workspace ensures that all team members have the information needed to have impact. We believe information hoarding creates silos, hierarchy, and unnecessary power dynamics.

Intentional Communication
Slack first, but structured: we use Slack for speed and connectivity, and rely on strict channel organization, pinned messages, and threaded conversations to maintain information integrity and availability. Prioritizing Slack as our main communication channel allows for more focused exchanges and removes noise from working across multiple communication channels.

Structured Rhythms
As a hybrid company, structured communication channels are essential for us to connect and collaborate. We hold monthly All Hands, company-wide meetings to review metrics, share tactical updates, and ensure broad strategic discussion and alignment. Following every Board Meeting, our Executive Team reviews the most recent Board Meeting, sharing key themes, decisions, and discussions.

Annual Reset & Co-Working Weeks
We have key anchor points in our annual calendar to focus on high-bandwidth collaboration, problem solving, strategy, and building social capital across our teams. For our Annual Reset, the entire company travels to a destination location for an immersive week of deep strategy, relationship building, and team bonding. On a quarterly basis, our team gathers in San Francisco for co-working weeks, in concert with the quarterly Board Meeting and an in-person All Hands. On an unscheduled basis, our team members on the East Coast gather in New York City for co-working and collaboration.

Fixes made: removed the dangling "and" in the Transparency paragraph (it created a run-on), changed "more focus exchanges" to "more focused exchanges," added a comma so "sharing key themes, decisions, and discussions" reads as a clean list rather than a garbled clause, hyphenated "in-person," and capitalized "East Coast" and "New York City."
